The Boston Celtics haven’t made their fans happy this offseason, but their most recent contract extension will make them at least smile today, as it was announced the team re-signed Neemias Queta to a four-year contract extension worth $56 million starting in 2027-28 and it will go through 2030-31. It’s also fully guaranteed.
The Celtics started the week by picking up their team-option on Queta’s contract and now they’ve extended him to lock-in their top center for the future. It’s fair to say that Boston always had a long term goal in mind for Queta as he progressed through the development plan in Maine and worked his way up to Boston in 2023-24.
Since then, Queta has played in 166 games for Boston in the regular season and 14 in the playoffs in that span as well. He’s coming off the best season of his career last year after taking on a larger role, averaging 10.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game. After the Celtics moved on from Al Horford, Luke Kornet, and Kristaps Porzingis, Boston relied heavily on Queta to be their top guy- which he proved to do so well.
The Celtics secured their frontcourt by signing one of the top centers in free agent Mitchell Robinson, who is coming off a championship season with the New York Knicks. With Queta and Robinson, Boston has an elite defensive frontcourt with rim protection.
It’s worth mentioning that ESPN’s Bobby Marks noted that with Queta and the team exercising his option for this season, and not give him the immediate salary of his extension, it gives Boston added cap flexibility for this season.
With Queta now extended, he’s most likely to remain Boston’s starting center even with the addition of Robinson.
