The Boston Celtics have made serious roster changes this offseason and they continue to tinker with it now that Summer League is over.

In doing so, Jordan Walsh has a contract update that’ll keep him in Boston for the foreseeable future.

On Monday, Walsh’s contract became fully guaranteed for $2.4 million, according to Spotrac’s Keith Smith, as he enters the fourth year of his career.

“Walsh will be extension-eligible throughout the balance of the season. He can extend for up to 140% of the average player salary, which would start at $21.2M per season.”

For Walsh, he needs to show that he’s ready to take the next leap in his career, which is becoming more of a scorer when he’s on the floor.

His defensive capabilities are top notch, but he needs to show that he can provide points to be more well-rounded so that head coach Joe Mazzulla will utilize him in more ways than one.

At 22-years-old, and 6-foot-6, 202 lbs., the upside on Walsh is tremendously high and the Celtics want (need) to see it from him this season.

The expectations for him have always been high since drafting him 38th overall and signing him to a standard four-year contract in 2023.

Over the last three years, Walsh has played 129 games in the regular season and 15 in the playoffs. Last year was his breakout year, averaging 5.4 points on 51/38/77 shooting splits with four rebounds in 17.8 minutes per game.

This is an important year for Walsh to show that he can be a serviceable player for Boston, as the wing rotation is congested so now he’ll have to make himself standout from the rest even more so this year.

It’s worth mentioning that Mazzulla planned time over the summer to spend with Walsh in his home area of Dallas, Texas. Walsh took him to his favorite barbecue restaurant while they talked and got to know each other more on a personal level.

This is all in part of Mazzulla’s plan to get to know his players off the court. Perhaps they talked about what his goals for the season should be, but it meant a lot to Walsh for Mazzulla to dedicate that time for him.

“I was definitely surprised. Liked what the hell does Joe want? But it was cool. It was so cool that he was making that kind of effort to come see me.”

Walsh will have the opportunity to prove himself this season and it could keep him in Boston for years down the road.
