The Boston Celtics need to get a couple more bulldogs on their team. A player that can come off the bench and provide stability along with the group. A player like Taurean Prince.
In August of 2021, Prince was acquired by the Timberwolves, along with a 2022 second round pick and a TPE from the Cavaliers in exchange for Ricky Rubio.
Last season in Minnesota, Prince averaged 7.3 points per game on 45.4 percent shooting from the field and 37.6 percent from behind the arc.
Prince is set to become an unrestricted free agent and will be at a marketable price for the Celtics to offer a contract to.
The Celtics have always had an additional bulldog alongside Marcus Smart. The days of Jae Crowder, Marcus Morris, and Aaron Baynes proved to be a good thing for the team to have.
Prince has bounced around since entering the NBA with Atlanta. In his second season in the league, Prince started all 82 games for the Hawks in 2017-18. He’s durable, reliable, and can hold his own against the best of ‘em.
He’s going to be looking for a place to reintroduce himself to teams around the league. A place like Boston can certainly get him noticed as a serviceable player on a championship contending team.
The Celtics have said many times that one of the main plans this offseason is to strengthen their bench and add scoring to it when Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown come off the court. Prince could be that guy.
In my opinion, Prince would accept an offer from the Celtics. And it would be fair. Similar to what we’ve seen in the past with some of their veteran role players on the pickup market: 2 years for $10-13 Million with a player/team option after the first year.
It’s worth mentioning that Celtics head coach Ime Udoka was an assistant coach in Brooklyn during the same time Prince was there during the 2020-21 season.
Perhaps there’s a connection between Udoka and Prince that we’ll later find out about.
