The Boston Celtics assembled the best team in the Summer League. Brad Stevens acquired a handful of talent in the short offseason his team had to work with after playing in the NBA Finals.
In doing so, Stevens found the most talented player in the G League to join his Summer League squad with the possibility of earning an NBA contract at the end of it. That player is forward/ center combo Mfiondu Kabengele.
Kabengele is 6’9”, 250 lbs. and has spent the last two years in the G League after being drafted in the first round in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Brooklyn Nets. However, his draft rights were traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for a future first round pick.
Since being in the NBA, Kabengele has been a journeyman up to this point. He’s played for a few teams but has made his biggest impact in the G League over the last two years and that’s what was intriguing the most to Stevens.
These are Kabengele’s stats in two seasons in the G League between two different teams:
Not to mention Kabengele was a key part in the Rio Grande Valley Vipers winning the 2022 G League Championship this past season- he set a G League Finals record with 8 blocks.
It’s fair to assume Stevens hasn’t used the largest TPE he has available in his wallet in consideration to the amount of talent he and his colleagues believe they currently have on their Summer League roster.
The Celtics have three roster spots available on their 15-man roster along with two open two-way contracts available to offer.
It’s fair to say at this point in the offseason that Stevens plans to use his available roster spots with a handful of the players he has playing for him in Summer League.
I believe Mfiondu Kabengele could be one of those players to be playing for the Celtics this season.
